The sharpshooters were instructed to stand with the first line of defense in front of the continental army. The men were called sharpshooters because they had a good aim and were good at hitting their targets. These men were stationed at the skirmish line, which means they were standing at the line where the British soldiers and American soldiers would first come together in the fight. The sharpshooters waited at this line until the British army were within shooting distance, and were told to slow the British down. The sharpshooters killed 767 British soldiers before the British were able to reach the Americans, and then moved back to the second line of defense, the continental army.
