The cavalry were the third and last line of defense for the American troops, which means they were the farthest away from the British army. The open forest at Cowpens was the perfect place for the cavalry. The cavalry are soldiers who fight while riding a horse! The American cavalry were called “Light Dragoons”, and were an important part of the American troops. There were 137 people who made up the cavalry during this battle. They were armed with pistols and sabers, which is a heavy sword, and were hidden from the British in the open forest.
